When a network grows from one or two access points to several APs, I think the backhaul becomes just as important as the wireless coverage itself.
For smaller setups, Ethernet uplinks are usually straightforward. But when access points are spread across different floors, buildings, or longer distances, fiber can be a practical option.
A few things seem worth considering before installing the fiber backhaul:
Distance between the switches and access points
Single-mode vs. multimode fiber
SFP/SFP+ compatibility
Required bandwidth
Connector type
Future WiFi upgrades
For example, upgrading to newer WiFi standards while keeping an older 1Gbps uplink can sometimes create a bottleneck. For those running multiple WiFi APs, what do you normally use for the backhaul?
Do you stick with Ethernet wherever possible, or use fiber when the distance or network design makes it more practical?
